Whilst working on my forthcoming beat tape I've hit a conundrum that bugs me about most production styles I hear lately.
Chopping of samples. Now some do it really well, others not. For instance, I can appreciate the effort the likes of Samiyam etc. put into their work, but it's glitchy-ness (for lack of a better word) reminds me more of Four Tet than Dilla, the latter who didn't chop samples as much as some people think.
I'm of the opinion that as I'm doing this on my own and currently have no emcees or singers to work with, if I find a dope loop, I'm gonna rock the dope loop. Or at least chop it well enough to sound like a loop.
Stabs on the other hand are a different matter.

yes Johnny,
I like to rock those loops if they are obscure enough, but if I need to camouflage that shit then I get the knives out and chop that shit up.
But if it aint broke, dont fix it!
keep rocking

Thanks for peeping the blog. I know the Diggers crates are deep enough for the obscure loops, so I don't think you guys have much to worry about!
Peace.
i think it all boils down to your own preferences musically...what makes a beat special to you. while some appreciate the technicalities and the amount of laborious work that went into the production, there are just as many who disregard that altogether and are only concerned with melodies, moods, grooves, and emotions. i've come to peace with this dilemma personally when i noticed that most of my favorite beats were simply awesome loops with maybe a great sounding drum to go with it. i find that many times the preservation of a beautiful melody is more important than the displaying of technical prowess in production ability. i agree with Daily Diggers, if it ain't broke, why fix it?
